Young boys and girls who join the National Defence Academy come out as individuals who are physically, mentally and emotionally capable of handling any situation. NDA coaching classes in Mumbai ensure holistic development of cadets.
There are a total of 18 squadrons at the NDA. They are Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hunter, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Panther, Quebec and Romeo. Battalion 1, 2, 3 and 4 have four squadrons each while battalion 5 has 2 squadrons. Every squadron has about 100 to120 cadets divided equally across all 6 terms. On joining the academy, cadets are assigned a battalion and a cabin which becomes a part of their identity for the entire duration of their stay at the academy. In addition, they also get a bicycle to travel within the institute.
A separate squadron for females named “Sierra” was mooted but it was scrapped and it has been decided that the squadron for female cadets will be merged with the existing squadron. It will ensure better integration and less division amongst candidates based on gender. The Sierra squadron will be operational in three years.
Initially, during the first two months of NDA coaching in Mumbai, cadets are given an orientation for two months during which they are conditioned to toughen up mentally as well as physically. There are camps every term to train cadets in different activities like map reading etc. Cadets are taught to work as a team and lead their teams and squadrons.
During the 5th and 6th semesters, cadets get training in their respective services through participation in x-country, athletics, boxing, quizzes and others that keep the candidates engaged. Cadets compete against one another in these events and also represent their squadrons for the title of best squadron.
